She was known as 'the girl with a tear in her voice' and 'Miss Rhythm' and her career spanned nearly six decades.  She won a Tony, a Grammy, multiple W.C. Handy awards (including a Lifetime Achievement Award) and has been inducted to the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame.
